Chapter One: Homecoming
The screen of the fancy 60" color television showed a network news reporter
interviewing the media spokesperson of the state police.
"I am Tracy Wyatt of KNBX. We are here live at the capital building with Lt. Gerald Roberts. Lt. Roberts, what is the latest development in this tragic drama?"
Lt. Roberts was a slender man with a southern accent. He spoke in a formal manner.
"Well, I have excellent news to give the public: all the suspects have now been apprehended. They are safely in custody, and the district attorney is filing charges against them even as we speak."
"What about the victims? You say they survived the five-month ordeal without any harm at all?"
"That's right. I am pleased to say that Mrs. Smith and her daughter Sarah have been freed and are now safe at home, re-united with a very happy Mr. Smith. They are recuperating..."
Angrily, Nancy Smith clicked the remote control, shutting the television off. The screen went dark. In tears, she turned and faced her distraught husband.
"Yes I am sure!" she exclaimed. "I didn't need the damn doctor to confirm it, but he did! I I am pregnant!" she blurted out, sobbing.
Mr. Smith looked miserably at his wife; somehow he just knew what was coming next; life had been nothing but hell for him ever since that wretched day when his wife and child dissappeared.
"So is Sarah!" she sobbed.
He stood stunned for a moment.
"No! That's impossible!" he finally burst out. "She's she's not even fourteen yet!" he sobbed out loud to himself. "Tell me she can't be! She is just a baby herself; she can't be having babies!"
Nancy only looked at him; he shut up. After they were silent for what seemed eternity, he spoke again.
"We will just have to bear this. The Lord will help us find a way," he said, trying to regain his composure; but it seemed his wife had one surprise for him after another.
"Jim Sarah wants an abortion."
"What?"
"She told me a month ago."
"No daughter of mine is having an abortion!" Jim shouted. Then, thinking about his wife's statement. "A month? She knew already a month ago?"
"She knew before then, I am sure; I said a month ago she told me."
Husband and wife stared at each other in misery.
"Oh god!" Jim groaned. He stopped. His mouth opened to speak; he changed his mind; then changed it again. "Nancy ok I have spent the last five months worried sick not knowing what was going on tell me now what happened."
Tears flooded Nancy's face; Jim had always wanted to know everything, and she never had refused to tell him anything since the day he first proposed to her; but tell him this? How his daughter got pregnant? Tell him every detail of what those horrible men did with two very scared females for almost five months? Did he know what he was asking?
She shuddered; she felt like throwing up. She looked at her husband.
Jim had his flaws; but overall, she felt he was a decent man, if somewhat narrow-minded and overbearing. But sometimes he could be so stupid and unimaginative. This was one time, though, he was asking for too much. Nancy had so far managed to keep from telling details to the police, even when the D.A. himself had wanted to speak to her. She couldn't believe how men where. Couldn't they just leave Sarah and her alone? She just wanted to forget the past, not re-live it. Her thoughts were interrupted by her husband's voice.
"Dear I want to know. Whatever it was, I will stand by you. The state is prosecuting; they are going to want you to testify. I am your husband. Whatever happened, it is my right to know first."
Nancy moaned. Would this ordeal never end?
She snapped. A feeling of hatred swept over her for her husband for the police for the damn district attorney. Filthy, loathsome beasts they were, worse even than the ones who had raped her. Yes, she would tell him what happened; tell all of them the whole filthy story. But this time she was going to demand a price. Her daughter was going to have that abortion, even if she had to divorce Jim and take Sarah away from him.
"Fine. I will tell you," she said. "We were gone a lifetime it seems, this is going to be a long tale. But I can see what is on your mind, so I won't keep you in suspense. Your daughter lost her virginity the first week."
Nancy looked at her husband to see his reaction; he was silent. Finally, he spoke.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
"Yes!" she sobbed.
"How can you be so sure?"
"I am sure!" she said, crying.
"What do you mean, you are sure? Did she tell you?" he asked.
"No!" Nancy sobbed.
"Then maybe you are wrong." he suggested.
"I am not wrong!" she said stridently.
"How do you know?" he pressed.
"I saw them do it!" she said in a flood of tears.
"You saw it?" he asked incredulously.
"Yes, damn you! They made me watch."
