What you don't know can kill you..
Regular screening is the key to eliminating deaths from cervical cancer.
There is now conclusive evidence that the human papilloma virus (HPV) causes
cervical cancer. No woman need die from this form of cancer - if she sees
her doctor before it is too late.
HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted viruses. It is estimated that over 80% of women will become infected with HPV at some time. There are over 70 types of HPV, but only thirteen key types are currently known to be associated with cervical cancer.
For the vast majority of women, infection with HPV is without symptoms and their immune system is able to control the virus. However, some women, especially those with persistent infection, may develop precancerous cell changes and even cervical cancer. These changes can be detected with a Pap test. In addition to the Pap test, a new test that can detect HPV is available to women whose Pap test results are equivocal. This test can tell a woman and her healthcare professional if she is at risk for developing cervical cancer.
With early detection and education, no woman need die from cervical cancer. Mark your January calendar each year with this message. Spread the word.
